The Children’s Aid Society of Haldimand and Norfolk strongly support the Roots of Empathy program that strives to establish caring communities by developing empathy in adults and children.
Please visit the Haldimand and Norfolk Women’s Services website for information on the Route 50 Walk, a fundraising and awareness event to Grow a Caring Community available at www.hnws.on.ca. The following is an exerpt from the HNWS website regarding this campaign:
My name is Cindy Benko and on Saturday, April 4th, 2009 I will be celebrating a milestone birthday – 50! To help me celebrate, 50 community members 50 and over have agreed to help me fulfill the dream of a “walk for peace”.
I serve as a board member for Haldimand & Norfolk Women’s Services, and am actively involved in a number of its projects. Of particular interest to me is HNWS’ involvement with Roots of Empathy, an internationally recognized program that strives to build caring, peaceful, and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults.
The Roots of Empathy Program specifically targets elementary school students with classroom visits from a local baby, the baby’s parent(s) and a specially trained instructor to implement the curriculum. As the baby grows and changes, the instructor encourages children to observe and discuss the baby’s emotional development and attempt to understand their feelings. Follow up testing has shown that instances of emotional and physically aggression and bullying have decreased up to 70% in classrooms that have the program. My goal is to ultimately have the program running in all our schools, with the hope of building a more peaceful community.
On Saturday, April 4th, 2009, I am hosting the Route 50 Walk to Grow a Caring Community at the Todd Eaton Memorial Track at Port Dover Composite School. With the help and generosity of community leaders, business people, educators, parents and other community members who also believe in a peaceful, caring community, we hope to raise $50,000 to train more instructors and expand the Roots of Empathy Program. Our 5 km walk will begin on the track at 10:30 am with the beach our final destination.
